Deal counts and dollar totals do not move together

CB Insights' 2024 report shows deal counts falling while quarterly dollars rose, and two providers explain why counts revise more.

The record

Two numbers that usually move together did not in 2024. CB Insights' State of Venture 2024 Report states that global deal count fell to "27K in 2024 — its lowest annual level since 2016," a 19% year-over-year decline, with volume "slipping below 6,000 in Q4'24 for the first time since 2016." In the same report, fourth-quarter dollar funding moved the opposite direction: "$86.2B — a 2-year high, and an increase of 53% quarter-over-quarter." One CB Insights report, one calendar year, a falling count and a rising quarterly dollar figure, both stated by the same provider.

What the sources establish

The report establishes that count and dollar volume are separate series that can diverge inside a single provider's own numbers, not only between providers; a rising Q4 dollar total sitting inside a year of falling deal count is consistent with fewer, larger rounds rather than broader dealmaking. PitchBook's published methodology treats the two series as requiring separate estimation procedures: it describes a specific "Deal and exit count estimation" step, using the "average percentage change in deal count over the trailing 24 months," while deal value is separately "extrapolated using a multidimensional estimation matrix" for undisclosed sizes. Crunchbase's methodology page gives a reason the count series moves more after publication: "data lags tend to be most pronounced at the earliest stages," where round counts are highest but round sizes, and therefore dollar impact, are smallest.

Scope and revision

This establishes a general pattern the methodology pages describe, not a guarantee for every quarter: small, early-stage deals are disclosed later and less completely than large ones, so a quarter's deal count is more likely to be revised upward after first print than its dollar total, because dollar totals are already dominated by the largest, most quickly disclosed rounds. None of the three sources states a specific size of that revision gap for 2024 itself; the CB Insights figures above are a single first-print illustration of count and dollar diverging, not a measured revision.

The decision in front of you

A reader deciding whether "the market is recovering" should ask which series is doing the recovering, because a rising dollar total alongside a falling or flat deal count usually means conditions improved for a smaller set of companies raising larger rounds, not that fundraising became easier broadly. This distinction is an editorial reading the cited reports support but do not spell out as advice.

  • Is the trend I am citing about deal count, dollar volume, or both moving the same direction?
  • If only dollars rose, does the source show whether a few large rounds explain it?
  • Is the deal count figure recent enough that it is still likely to be revised upward?

Counting deals and summing dollars are two different questions about the same market, and a provider's own report is usually the place that shows they disagree.
