A quarterly venture total is a first print, not a final one

PitchBook's own methodology page explains how it estimates late-arriving deals before a quarter's total is treated as settled.

The record

The PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor is the venture data series most often quoted without its source line. PitchBook and NVCA describe it, on NVCA's page for the report, as a jointly produced quarterly report on US venture capital investment, fundraising and exits. PitchBook publishes its counting rules on a standing page, PitchBook Report Methodologies, retrieved 16 September 2026, which states that private-market deal and exit counts are not complete when a quarter closes: information "often does not become available until well after a transaction takes place." PitchBook estimates how much new information will surface over the following four quarters by calculating the average change in deal count over the trailing 24 months, then adds that estimate to the quarter's reported figure. The most recent public edition, the Q1 2026 Venture Monitor, records US venture deal value of $267.2 billion and exit value of $347.3 billion for the quarter, both records for their series.

What the sources establish

The methodology page establishes a specific mechanic, not a general disclaimer: PitchBook states that "both the original reported figure and the estimated figure are provided for the reader's reference," so a reader can see the confirmed count and the count PitchBook expects once late-arriving deals are added. The Q1 2026 report's own table of contents lists a dedicated "Methodology" section at page 34, separate from its market commentary. NVCA's page adds production context rather than method: it names PitchBook as its data provider and describes the report's coverage, without itself stating counting rules.

Scope and revision

The estimation procedure covers deal and exit counts specifically, not every figure in the report; PitchBook states that deal values are separately extrapolated using "a multidimensional estimation matrix" for transactions it has not directly collected, and that some datasets include those extrapolated values while others do not, which "explains any potential discrepancies" a reader might notice between PitchBook products. The Q1 2026 figures above are a first print, reported before the estimate revision the methodology page describes has been applied. What the page cannot support is a comparison to a fixed, final figure, because it describes revision as routine rather than exceptional.

The decision in front of you

A founder or analyst quoting this series should name the quarter, the edition, and whether the figure is a deal count or a dollar value, since PitchBook estimates and revises those separately; this is an editorial recommendation, not an instruction on either cited page. Treat a single-quarter figure as provisional until roughly a year of later editions have passed over it.

  • Is the figure I am quoting a first print, or does the source say it has already been revised?
  • Does the number describe deal count, deal value, or exit value, and which one does my claim actually need?
  • Would the same quarter's figure in next year's edition of this report likely be higher, on the estimation method described?

None of this makes the Venture Monitor unreliable; it makes it a running estimate with a published repair mechanism, a different thing to cite than a closed book of facts.
