CB Insights counted $57.2 billion of global digital health startup funding in 2021, 79% above its 2020 figure. Its report also described records in deal count, exits and valuations, indicating that the sector's boom reached several points in the company lifecycle.

A broad but defined sector

Digital health spans tools sold to care providers, consumers and the organizations that pay for care. A large annual number does not tell us which business models were equally investable, or whether deployments in clinics and health systems progressed at the same rate as financings. The financing figure measures investors' willingness to fund a category as CB Insights defines it. It is not a measure of clinical effectiveness, adoption, or health outcomes.

The exit signal matters

CB Insights highlighted exit and valuation records alongside the funding peak. A receptive exit market can strengthen the logic of private rounds: investors have visible examples of how an ownership stake might become liquid. It can also raise expectations for the next cohort. Companies raising in such a period may inherit growth targets and valuations that are difficult to support when public-market conditions change. The report provides the historical setting for those later pressures without proving that every 2021 transaction was overpriced.

Keep the comparison inside its series

The public report page is a preview of a longer proprietary study. The $57.2 billion total and 79% growth figure should therefore be attributed to CB Insights rather than blended with another provider's health-tech tally. Categories such as biotech, provider software and wellness may be bounded differently elsewhere. The useful question for readers is how much capital was available to this defined cohort at the peak, followed by which companies converted that capital into sustainable operating progress. The report establishes the first question, not the second.

Keep the context

Public CB Insights page summarizes a longer report; taxonomy and underlying deal coverage are provider-specific.
