Galaxy Research reported that Bitcoin gained more than 160% in 2023, while crypto venture investment ended the year at about one-third of each of the preceding two years. The fourth quarter drew $1.98 billion across 359 deals.

Two clocks were running

Public token prices can react quickly to market liquidity, expectations and positioning. A venture investor must underwrite a private company's product, team, cap table and eventual exit over a longer horizon. A rising token market may improve sentiment or customer activity without making a difficult venture portfolio easier to finance. Galaxy's chart illustrates that divergence: venture capital and deal count continued to reach new quarterly lows even as the most visible crypto asset climbed.

Stage and category still mattered

Galaxy described earlier-stage companies as the majority of 2023 crypto deal activity. It also found that, in the fourth quarter, nearly 40% of deals involved US-headquartered startups. Neither observation says all crypto subsectors shared the same funding conditions. Infrastructure, compliance, custody and consumer projects face different regulatory and technical risks. A founder citing a token rally as proof of available growth capital would be skipping the step that investors actually price: the business and its stage.

Handle the lag

The Galaxy series uses PitchBook data, and the provider warns that venture deals are often reported late. Its January 2024 account is a historical snapshot of information then available, with quarterly values potentially revised. The $1.98 billion fourth-quarter number should not be treated as a permanent audited total. Nor does the annual one-third comparison establish why every investor pulled back; the report discusses tighter capital and industry failures as context, but the chart itself establishes the funding pattern rather than a single cause.

Keep the context
