The record
Two editions of the same underlying dataset show what revision state means in practice. On 6 January 2025, PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association published a Q4 2024 Venture Monitor First Look, which describes its year-end tally as based on our estimates and notes that nearly 30% of completed US deals that year went to AI companies. A week later, on 13 January 2025, the same partnership published the full Q4 2024 PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, sponsored by J.P. Morgan, Dentons and Deloitte, with its own numbered methodology section in the table of contents. Separately, Invest Europe's research page, retrieved 16 September 2026, states that its statistics draw on data collected from more than 1,750 firms and points readers to a separate glossary defining the scope and the fund-inclusion criteria behind its own figures.
What the sources establish
The two Venture Monitor editions establish that the same reporting period can carry two different labels: a First Look, built from estimates issued while the quarter is still being reconstructed, and a Venture Monitor, the reconciled edition released once the estimation step has been checked against fuller data and documented in a methodology section. Nothing in the First Look claims finality; the document says so itself. Invest Europe's page establishes a second axis: scope. A figure drawn from more than 1,750 named firms covers a defined population, and Invest Europe directs a reader to a separate document before that population should be treated as comparable to a data provider's deal-level count. None of the three pages states that its numbers can substitute for one another.
Scope and revision
Four labels sit behind any usable venture figure. Provider: which organisation produced it, under which named methodology. Period: what date range the figure covers, and whether that range is a quarter, a trailing four quarters, or a calendar year. Scope: what population or activity is counted in and out, such as Invest Europe's named firm count or PitchBook's exclusions from deal activity. Revision: whether the number is a first pass, like the First Look's estimate, or a reconciled figure carrying a stated methodology, like the full Venture Monitor. Dropping any one of the four turns a checkable figure into an unverifiable one.
The decision in front of you
This is an editorial standard, not a claim that every provider follows it. Before a figure moves from a report into a deck, a memo or a headline, attach its provider, period, scope and revision state in the same sentence that states the number.
- Does the source label this figure as a first pass, an estimate, or a reconciled total?
- What population or activity does the stated scope include and exclude?
- Could a reader locate the same period from the same provider and land on a different, later number?
A figure that travels with all four labels can be checked by the next person who reads it. One that does not can only be repeated.
