The record

Crunchbase News published its year-end 2024 recap of European startup funding on 13 January 2025. It counts $51 billion raised by European-headquartered startups across the year, a 5 percent decline from the $54 billion Crunchbase recorded for 2023, and puts Europe's share of global venture funding at 16 percent, down from 18 percent in the prior two years. Five months later, on 8 May 2025, Invest Europe published its own Investing in Europe: Private Equity Activity 2024 report, compiled from data submitted by more than 1,750 private equity and venture capital firms. Within that report's 126 billion euro total for all private equity activity, Invest Europe states that venture capital investment specifically reached 18 billion euros, spread across 4,639 companies backed by 1,137 firms, a figure it calls 19 percent above the five-year average.

What the sources establish

The two figures are not measuring the same thing. Crunchbase's number is a deal-level count of reported funding rounds, tagged by a company's headquarters and converted to US dollars at the exchange rate on each transaction's date; it spans seed through late-stage and growth rounds inside one headline figure. Invest Europe's number is a survey of its member firms' own reported activity, denominated in euros, and it deliberately separates Venture Capital from two other categories on the same page: 20 billion euros of Growth investment, down 13 percent year over year, and 87 billion euros of Buyout investment, up 42 percent.

Adding Invest Europe's venture and growth lines together still leaves a total well below Crunchbase's all-stage figure, which is itself one database's estimate rather than a fund-manager survey. Neither source describes the other's scope, and neither claims to.

Scope and revision

Invest Europe's report states that this edition includes, for the first time, listed private capital investment alongside its usual private figures, a scope change worth flagging before comparing year-over-year totals. Its venture capital line explicitly excludes buyout and treats growth-stage investment as a separate category, so the 18 billion euro figure is a stage-scoped subset, not a market total. Crunchbase's total is converted at spot exchange rates, so part of any year-over-year change reflects currency movement rather than underlying activity. Neither report restates a prior print; both are first prints for the periods they cover.

The decision in front of you

A founder or analyst who needs a European venture figure should identify which definition is being quoted before repeating it. Editorially: for capital reaching venture-stage companies specifically, Invest Europe's stage-scoped euro figure is the closer match; for aggregate reported deal activity across all stages in dollars, Crunchbase's number is closer, with the caveat that it is one database's count rather than a market-wide census.

  • Which stages does the quoted figure include, and which does it explicitly exclude?
  • Is the number denominated in euros or dollars, and at what exchange-rate convention?
  • Has this report edition changed its own scope from the prior year?

Two careful providers can both be right and still produce numbers that cannot be reconciled into one European total, because they never counted the same deals in the same currency.
