The record
CVCA, the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, published its H1 2026 market report on 4 August 2026, reporting that CAD $2.69 billion was invested across 250 venture capital deals in Canada in the first half of 2026, up 17% from CAD $2.30 billion a year earlier, while deal count fell 8.8% from 274 to 250. CVCA's report states these figures come from 'the CVCA Intelligence platform, Canada's foremost private capital database,' the association's proprietary dataset, and every dollar figure is stated in Canadian dollars, not US dollars.
What the sources establish
CVCA describes itself, on its own mission page, as 'the voice of Canada's private capital industry,' a membership association representing more than 350 firms and over 3,300 individuals, not a data vendor sold independently of membership. CVCA's homepage states its 'research and CVCA Intelligence provide critical insights and analyses, including quarterly market reports,' and that an interactive map built on CVCA Intelligence tracks private capital activity 'from 2013 to the present,' citing a cumulative total of over CAD $297 billion invested across more than 7,300 companies since 2013, a figure combining private equity and venture capital together rather than isolating venture activity alone.
Scope and revision
The H1 2026 report carries a caution CVCA applies to its own data: 'Historical information provided by CVCA is subject to change,' and CVCA Intelligence content has been made available by public sources and third parties, 'subject to continuous change without notice,' and is not warranted as to completeness or accuracy. That is CVCA describing its own database as a compiled, revisable record rather than a fixed, audited count, meaning a figure quoted from an earlier CVCA report may not match a later report if CVCA has since revised the data. The currency point matters too: adding a CVCA total to a US-dollar provider's North American number without converting or labelling the currency would overstate the combined figure.
The decision in front of you
A founder or analyst citing CVCA data should state the currency explicitly, should check whether a figure covers venture capital alone or the broader private capital category CVCA's homepage sometimes reports together, and should treat historical CVCA figures as subject to CVCA's own stated revision policy rather than as final. This is editorial guidance: when comparing Canada with a US or global total, converting currency and separating venture from private equity are steps CVCA's own materials make clear are not done automatically.
- Is the CVCA figure denominated in Canadian or US dollars, and has that been stated wherever it is repeated?
- Does the figure isolate venture capital, or combine it with private equity as CVCA's homepage sometimes does?
- Has CVCA revised the historical figure being cited since an earlier report was published?
CVCA's own caveats, on currency, on scope, and on revision, sit on the same pages as its headline numbers, easy to find and easy to skip; a citation that keeps all three attached does the work CVCA's own methodology note asks for.
