British Patient Capital invests through funds, not founders

Launched in 2018 with a GBP 2.5bn commitment, British Patient Capital's own pages describe fund commitments and portfolio co-investment, not direct pitches.

The record

British Patient Capital launched on 3 June 2018 as a GBP 2.5 billion programme run by the British Business Bank. The launch release, retrieved via the Wayback Machine since the original britishpatientcapital.co.uk site has since folded into the Bank's own domain, states the programme 'fulfils the Chancellor's 2017 Autumn Budget commitment' from the Patient Capital Review and would be 'developed as a separate subsidiary of the British Business Bank.' It states British Patient Capital was seeded with about GBP 400 million of existing Venture Capital Catalyst commitments and, 'by investing alongside the private sector,' aimed to support a total of GBP 7.5 billion of investment.

What the sources establish

The current programme page, Patient Capital Funds, retrieved 16 September 2026, describes the same structure in present-tense terms: British Patient Capital 'seek[s] venture and venture growth opportunities with a UK focus' and works 'by making a cornerstone commitment to enable a first close, or by boosting a fund to achieve optimal size,' rather than writing cheques straight to companies. The page states the mandate leans toward the venture growth stage, while continuing 'some investments to funds focused at the earlier stage... to help build a pipeline of later-stage investment opportunities,' and separately runs a GBP 200 million Life Sciences Investment Programme for specialist fund managers. A co-investment strategy exists alongside the funds programme, but the page states this 'core co-investment programme is only open to companies within our underlying portfolio.'

Scope and revision

British Patient Capital does not itself pick individual companies to fund from a cold start; its own materials describe two access routes – fund commitments and portfolio co-investment – both gated through fund managers it has already backed. The GBP 2.5 billion figure at launch was a programme commitment ceiling, not a company-facing fund size, and the GBP 7.5 billion figure was an investment-mobilisation target achieved through private co-investment leverage, not British Patient Capital's own money. The GBP 200 million life-sciences carve-out is a stated ceiling for that specific sub-programme, separate from the core funds and co-investment activity.

The decision in front of you

A UK founder should approach British Patient Capital through the fund managers it already backs, or via the separate Future Fund: Breakthrough route the current page names for direct R&D-intensive applicants, rather than expecting a direct pitch to the programme itself. This reflects what the programme's own pages state about access, not investment guidance on any specific fund.

  • Is a British Patient Capital commitment being described as a direct company investment when its own materials say it invests through fund managers?
  • Does the GBP 2.5 billion or GBP 7.5 billion figure being cited refer to British Patient Capital's own commitment or the mobilised co-investment target?
  • Is the company or fund in question inside British Patient Capital's existing portfolio, a requirement for its core co-investment route?

Eight years on from its 2018 launch, British Patient Capital's own description of itself has not changed in kind: a government-backed subsidiary that scales UK venture and growth funding by backing fund managers, not by replacing them.
