AVCA's Africa venture data comes from its own fund network

AVCA's own Q2 2026 summary and Data and Intelligence page show its Africa venture figures rest on a decade-old proprietary fund-manager database.

The record

AVCA, the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association, published key findings from its Q2 2026 Venture Capital in Africa Report on 28 July 2026, according to its own Data and Intelligence page. AVCA's summary states African VC fundraising, in final and interim fund closes, reached US$558 million in H1 2026, already surpassing full-year 2025 fundraising, while deal volume fell 24% year over year to 182 deals, the lowest first-half total since 2020, even as funding rose 67% to US$2.0 billion on the strength of three megadeals. The full report is gated to AVCA members and, in shorter form, to non-members who register; this trace rests on AVCA's own published summary of key findings, not the full document.

What the sources establish

AVCA's own Data and Intelligence page describes itself as 'the leading data and intelligence source for Africa private capital activity and industry trends,' stating it has produced independent research on the continent's private capital activity for 'over a decade,' built on a 'proprietary and comprehensive pan-African database of funds, deals and exits.' AVCA's own about page describes the organisation as a membership association of capital allocators, investors, fund managers, advisors and entrepreneurs, registered as a company in England and Wales and headquartered in London, meaning its data collection depends on relationships with African and Africa-focused fund managers reporting into that database rather than on a continent-wide filing regime.

Scope and revision

AVCA's own key findings distinguish deal volume from deal value and separate fundraising from investment activity, the same three-way split several other publishers here apply; its Q2 2026 figures are stated in US dollars, and its regional breakdowns, citing West Africa's 31% share of deal volume and a 'Multi-Region' category capturing a record 72% of capital from 13% of deals, show a continental total obscures sharp differences in where volume and value concentrate. Because AVCA's coverage depends on fund managers voluntarily reporting into its database, and the full methodology sits behind the same member or registration gate as the report, this trace cannot state AVCA's exact verification procedure beyond what its public summary describes.

The decision in front of you

An analyst should not add an AVCA figure to a global provider's separately produced Africa estimate, since the two are built from different fund-manager relationships and verification steps, and should note AVCA's own report separates volume, value, fundraising and exits rather than blending them into one number. This is editorial guidance: where AVCA's breakdown shows activity concentrated in a Multi-Region category, a reader should ask what that category means before citing a single-country figure as representative of the whole continent.

  • Does the AVCA figure cited cover fundraising, investment, or exits, and for which period?
  • Is a country- or region-level share being generalised to the whole continent when AVCA's own data shows concentration?
  • Would a global provider's independently produced Africa estimate draw on the same fund managers AVCA tracks, or a different set?

AVCA's decade of Africa-specific data collection is what a US or European provider's continent-wide estimate typically lacks, and why the two should be read side by side rather than merged into one figure.
