CB Insights put global fintech funding at $75.2 billion in 2022, 46% below its 2021 record, across 5,048 deals. The final quarter alone fell to $10.7 billion, its lowest quarterly total since 2018 in that series.

Large rounds took the sharper hit

Rounds of at least $100 million supplied $36.5 billion in 2022, 60% less than the prior year according to CB Insights. This contraction was steeper than the 8% decline in overall deal count. A founder trying to judge the market from the number of announced financings could therefore miss how much the price and availability of large late-stage checks had changed. The same report shows banking startup funding down 63%, another reminder that fintech is not a single financing environment.

A weak finish changes the annual reading

The annual $75.2 billion figure was still 52% above 2020, but that backward comparison hides the trajectory within 2022. The last quarter's $10.7 billion shows a much weaker funding pace than the full-year average. Annual totals aggregate deals struck under different interest-rate and valuation conditions. For a company planning a 2023 raise, the most recent quarter would have been the more relevant signal than a comparison with a pre-boom year.

The geographical exception

Africa was the only major region in the CB Insights report to increase fintech deal count from 2021, reaching 227 deals, up 25%. That does not mean African companies received more capital in every segment, nor that the region escaped the downturn. It shows why a global funding line can conceal different patterns of company formation and ticket size. Compare regions within a provider's same methodology, and separate deal activity from financing volume before drawing an operating conclusion.
