Crunchbase News initially counted $300 billion in global venture funding for 2020, 4% above 2019. That is the report-time reading, not a fixed historical total.

An uneven shock
The pandemic changed demand rather than stopping venture investment across the board. Online work, health, education, commerce and the infrastructure supporting those services gained relevance as physical activity was disrupted. The funding total compresses that uneven response into a single global number.
Why the year matters
2020 is the base against which the 2021 surge is often measured. But a later Crunchbase report raised its 2020 comparator to $335 billion. Any growth rate that mixes the original $300 billion with a later 2021 figure will exaggerate the jump.
Reading the tape
A founder should treat the annual figure as evidence that capital remained available, not evidence that every category could raise on comparable terms. The market's resilience was linked to specific shifts in demand and the accompanying IPO and acquisition climate.
The exit backdrop also matters. A receptive acquisition or public market changes how investors price private rounds, because it offers a plausible route to realization. Funding and exit data belong in the same cycle reading.
