Partech Africa recorded 359 equity rounds in African tech startups during 2020, 44% more than in 2019. Those rounds raised $1.43 billion, a 29% fall. Deal volume and funding value were moving in opposite directions.

The size mix changed

The apparent contradiction is largely a stage and ticket-size story. Partech's companion release counted 228 seed deals, up 80%, while growth-stage ticket sizes fell sharply. The full report shows only two rounds above $50 million in 2020, down from the previous year's large-round pattern. Smaller transactions can create a busier market even when the sum of capital falls. For a founder, the lesson is to locate their stage in the distribution before applying a regional headline to a fundraising plan.

Disclosure changes the tape

Partech also reported that 52% of its tracked deals were fully disclosed in 2020, compared with 70% in 2019. Another 36% were only partially disclosed. That matters because a public announcement database alone would miss some activity and may mistake a reporting change for a market change. Partech gathered confidential information directly from founders and investors, an advantage for coverage but a method that still depends on its network and inclusion rules.

What this does and does not show

The report concerns equity rounds above $200,000 in defined African tech and digital startups. It does not measure every small startup cheque, company, or financing instrument across the continent. The 2020 result is evidence that the pipeline broadened during a severe shock. It does not mean companies at every stage had easier access to capital. The disappearing large rounds explain much of the dollar decline, while a higher count of smaller rounds suggests a different set of firms still found investors.

Keep the context

Partech's defined, partly confidential equity dataset is not a complete census of African startups.
