SVB's State of the Markets still runs on its own client sample

The record

Before its 2023 failure, Silicon Valley Bank published an annual venture-sector commentary; that report continues today as the State of the Markets report, now issued under a byline naming Silicon Valley Bank as a division of First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company. The current H2 2026 edition states it synthesizes venture-backed innovation-economy data "through June 30, 2026." A companion page listing SVB's signature research confirms the report now runs "every six months," pairing SVB's own data with investor conversations and independent market analysis rather than appearing only once a year as it once did.

What the sources establish

The report's own sourcing lines mix two kinds of data. Its topline commentary draws on what SVB calls proprietary insights -- one section describes an analysis of "9,000" VC-backed companies, which reads as SVB's own client base rather than a market-wide sample. Individual charts, however, are separately footnoted to PitchBook Data, Inc. and SVB's own analysis, and one figure on founder formation blends several outside press sources with PitchBook and SVB's analysis. The report does not claim its client-based figures represent the whole venture market; it presents them as SVB's own book of business layered with licensed data and outside reporting.

Scope and revision

Because the client sample is drawn from companies banked by one institution, any figure sourced only to SVB's proprietary insights describes SVB's own portfolio, not a census -- a distinction the report's mixed footnoting makes easy to miss if a reader only takes in the topline claim. The signature-research page also documents a format change: the report is semiannual now, in H1 and H2 editions, which is not necessarily how it ran before 2023, and neither page states when that cadence took effect or whether the report was ever paused after the bank's failure and First Citizens' subsequent acquisition of it.

The decision in front of you

Editorially: attribute any SVB-only figure to SVB's client base specifically, not to "the venture market," and attribute any chart-level figure to PitchBook where the report's own footnote says so.

• Is this specific figure footnoted to SVB's proprietary data, to PitchBook, or to a blend of outside press sources?
• Does the claim implicitly generalize from SVB's own banked companies to the broader venture market?
• Has this edition's H1 or H2 cadence and First Citizens byline been checked against the edition actually being cited?

A bank's own venture-sector report can be a genuinely useful signal about its client base, and a source of licensed third-party figures besides -- but the two need to be told apart before either is quoted as a market fact.
