The record
The London Stock Exchange Group's all-share acquisition of Refinitiv completed on 29 January 2021, LSEG's own press release states, with Refinitiv's sellers receiving newly issued LSEG shares admitted to trading that morning and taking an approximate 37 per cent economic interest in the enlarged company. Refinitiv's venture-capital and private-markets data, much of it descended from the Thomson Reuters era and long cited in academic and industry work, passed into LSEG's ownership on that date along with the rest of the Refinitiv data business.
What the sources establish
As retrieved on 16 September 2026, refinitiv.com itself now redirects to LSEG's Data & Analytics site, evidence that the Refinitiv brand has been folded into LSEG rather than run as a separate business. The deals database long used for venture and M&A research, SDC Platinum, is now marketed as available on LSEG Workspace, described as holding "25+ years" of deals data spanning M&A, private equity and project finance. Neither page states that the product's stage or deal-type definitions are unchanged from the Thomson Reuters or Refinitiv era; the LSEG page describes today's product and access route, not a preserved methodology.
Scope and revision
A change of corporate ownership is not, by itself, a statement about data continuity. LSEG's completion release documents a corporate and shareholding transaction; it says nothing about how the underlying venture-capital classification rules were handled during integration. The SDC Platinum page's long-history claim establishes only that data extends back through the pre-LSEG period, not that every definitional choice in that history has stayed constant. A researcher citing a pre-2021 Refinitiv or Thomson Reuters venture-capital figure alongside a post-2021 LSEG-branded one is combining two vintages of a series whose continuity is asserted by neither party's own materials.
The decision in front of you
Editorially: treat 2021 as an ownership-transfer date only, and look for LSEG's own product documentation on SDC Platinum -- rather than the acquisition announcement -- before assuming stage or deal-type definitions held constant across the transition.
- Is a cited venture-capital figure from before or after 29 January 2021, and does the source label it Thomson Reuters, Refinitiv, or LSEG?
- Does LSEG's current product documentation state whether classification rules changed at any point in the Refinitiv-to-LSEG transition?
- Is the redirect from refinitiv.com to LSEG's site being read as proof of brand continuity, methodology continuity, or neither?
The corporate history here is documented down to the admission time on the London Stock Exchange; the data history behind any single venture-capital series that changed hands with it is not spelled out by either party's own pages.
