GIC describes its venture team but not its venture share

GIC's 2025/26 report details a dedicated early-stage Technology Investment Group while disclosing only three broad asset classes at portfolio level.

The record

GIC, which manages Singapore's foreign reserves, discloses less granular detail than Temasek but discusses its private markets activity in its annual report to the government. The Report on the Management of the Government's Portfolio for the Year 2025/26, published 24 July 2026 according to GIC's newsroom reports listing, and covering GIC's financial year ended 31 March 2026, states that GIC's 'private equity universe includes buyouts, minority growth, pre-initial public offerings (IPOs), venture capital, private credit, and special situations' and that GIC invests in this universe both directly and through a network of 'over 100 active fund managers.'

What the sources establish

The report describes a dedicated early-stage unit rather than treating venture as incidental. It states that, 'within Private Equity, our Technology Investment Group handles most of our early-stage investments through venture capital funds, growth equity funds, co-investments, and direct investments,' and separately that the Technology Investment Group, formed in 2017 and headquartered in San Francisco, has grown to around 20 investment professionals and, 'as a lifecycle investor,... deploys capital across venture, growth, and public markets.' The report also states GIC 'has been investing in the technology space for over 40 years' and, since the 1980s, in early-stage investing specifically. None of this is quantified as a share of the total portfolio.

Scope and revision

GIC's own Table 2, 'Asset Mix of the GIC Portfolio,' discloses only three broad groups for the year ended 31 March 2026: Equities at 56 percent, Fixed Income at 22 percent, and Real Assets at 22 percent, with no separate private equity or venture capital line at all. This is a narrower disclosure than Temasek's sector table, and it means any venture allocation figure attributed to GIC beyond the qualitative description above is an outside estimate, not a number GIC itself reports; the report gives no basis for calculating what portion of the 56 percent equities figure, if any, sits in venture-stage private equity.

The decision in front of you

An LP or analyst comparing GIC to peer sovereign funds should note that GIC's own report supports qualitative claims – dedicated team, decades of early-stage activity, lifecycle deployment – but not a quantitative venture allocation, and should resist any headline that assigns GIC a specific venture percentage without a cited GIC source. This is an editorial caution rather than a claim the report makes.

  • Does a cited GIC venture allocation trace to Table 2's three broad asset groups, or to an outside estimate?
  • Is the Technology Investment Group's activity being described only in the qualitative terms the report itself uses?
  • Which financial year end does the asset-mix percentage being quoted actually refer to, 2025 or 2026?

GIC's report shows a sovereign manager willing to describe its venture-investing infrastructure in detail while keeping its size undisclosed at the portfolio level, a different disclosure choice from either Temasek or Mubadala.
