The record

PitchBook reported on 14 September 2026 that climate tech VC fundraising is heading for its worst year in a decade: only six climate-specialist venture funds had closed as of 18 August 2026, and capital raised by such funds is projected to fall below $1 billion for the first time since 2015, against more than $10 billion raised by climate-specialist VC funds five years earlier. CTVC, the climate tech tracker built on the Currence data platform, reports a different series on its site, retrieved 16 September 2026: climate tech investment into companies totalled $30 billion in 2024, a 14 percent decline, after a weak first half of $11.3 billion that it says fell to 2020 levels; it also reports $26 billion invested in the first half of 2026, up 55 percent.

What the sources establish

PitchBook's figure measures fund formation: capital committed by limited partners into vehicles managed by climate-specialist VC firms, a supply-side measure of the capital pipeline. CTVC's figure measures deal deployment: capital invested directly into climate tech companies, a demand-side measure of what start-ups actually raised. A fund can deploy capital it raised in an earlier year, so even matching the two series by calendar period does not make them additive or comparable as one climate tech total.

Scope and revision

PitchBook's 2026 figure is explicitly a projection built from a partial year of closings, not a final count; its 2021 comparison figure is a completed-year total. CTVC's 2024 figure is presented as a completed-year total, while its H1 2026 figure is a half-year actual not yet annualised. Neither tracker states a formal definition of climate tech's boundaries in the material retrieved, which matters because a broader or narrower definition of the sector would move each total independently of any change in actual investment.

The decision in front of you

Before repeating a claim that climate tech funding is rising or falling, a reader should establish whether the cited number describes funds raised by investors or dollars deployed into companies. Editorially, both series can decline in the same year without one causing the other, and both can diverge for reasons neither document specifies.

  • Does the figure describe capital raised by funds or capital invested in companies?
  • Is the period a completed year, a partial year, or a projection?
  • What does the tracker count as climate tech, and is that boundary stated anywhere?

Two trackers, both credible within their own scope, can describe the same broad label moving in opposite directions in the same year, because fund formation and deal deployment are different stages of the same capital pipeline, not the same number measured twice.
