NVCA's PitchBook-backed 2026 Yearbook reports that nontraditional investors participated in roughly 30% of US deals in 2025. Deals with their participation represented 83% of investment value.

The composition signal

Hedge funds, sovereign funds, corporate strategics and other investors outside traditional venture appeared in many of the largest financings. The reported 83% is the full value of deals with their participation, not an estimate of the capital these investors supplied themselves. A dollar-weighted market view therefore answers a different question from a deal-count view.

Funds raised versus dollars deployed

Traditional US VC funds raised $67 billion across 585 funds in 2025. The same Yearbook reports $320 billion invested across 15,352 deals. Deployed capital can draw on prior fund vintages and other investor types; the two flows should not be expected to match within a calendar year.

Distributional implication

A founder seeking an ordinary early-stage check may not encounter the investors driving the aggregate value. Investor mapping should begin with who writes checks at the relevant size and stage, then consider whether strategic or crossover capital changes governance or follow-on expectations.

NVCA also counted only 101 first-time funds in 2025, versus 457 in 2021. That measures new manager formation, a different layer of participation from how many investors joined current company rounds.
